Rendered Block

What is Rendered Block?

Cement rendering is the application of a premixed layer of sand and cement to brick, concrete, stone, or mud brick. It is often textured, coloured, or painted after application. It is generally used on exterior walls but can be used to feature an interior wall. Depending on the 'look' required, rendering can be fine or coarse, textured or smooth, natural or coloured, pigmented or painted.

What are the benefits?

  • Attractive - rendered blocks can improve the look of the walls and can add a stylish touch to an otherwise boring exterior. Different textures can be achieved by making use of tools like brushes, sponges and stamps. The result is a classy exterior that can help improve the value of your home.
  • Durability - The exterior of a home is constantly exposed to the elements. The heat from the sun, moisture from the humidity and continuous wind can cause severe damage to the walls. When a coat of rendering is applied, it can help protect the inner layer from getting exposed to the elements and deteriorating over time.
  • Budget-friendly - Cement rendering is a budget-friendly way of adding aesthetic value to your home while other forms of rendering or home improvement plan are costly, cement rendering is great for those on a budget.
  • Adds character - You can easily customise the colours and designs to suit your own basic style and bring through your character.

The Installation Process

For a Rendered Block retaining wall:
A 300mm footing will be dug which will support the weight of the block wall and filled with high-quality concrete. After the concrete has sufficiently set. Concrete blocks will be set level and flush with mortar, staggering joints each course to create a strong yet beautiful wall. After the blocks have set, the first coat of render will be added, to the visible side only. This first coat is a 5mm scratch coat which will frost proof the block wall while giving a strong bonding point for the final 10mm render coat. Once the final coat has been added and has been left to sufficiently dry, the render is floated up, where a float is used to smooth off and level the surface. A final pass will be made with a damp sponge to really even out the render and stop future cracking. Once the render has set, it will be painted towards the end of the job with high quality white outdoor paint.

For Rendered Block wall planters:
The area for the planter will be marked and excavated at 300mm. Concrete will then be added and levelled, left to harden. Concrete blocks will then be set level and flush on a bed of mortar, staggering joints each course to create a strong yet beautiful shaped planter. After the blocks have set, corner beading will be added to all edges to ensure no cracking and a professional finish. Weep holes will also be added for drainage. This first coat is a 10mm scratch coat which will frostproof the block wall while giving a strong bonding point for the final 15mm render coat. Planters will be lined with Visqueen. The infill of the planters will use mostly what we dig out from the rest of the garden, a final topping of a high-quality mushroom and soil compost will leave the planters looking beautiful and full of nutrition, ready for planting!
