 What is Natural Stone?

The term ‘natural stone’ refers to any product that is quarried from the earth.

What are the benefits?

  • Natural look - natural stone has a beauty that has developed over time and reflects the natural process taken during the stones formation. The natural fading of colours, impressions of fossils, veins, grains, patterns, styles, and shades of colours making each stone piece unique.
  • Increased value - natural stone gives your property a rustic and time-worn effect. The durability, strength and versatility of natural stones can add an immediate increase of value to your property.
  • Durable - natural stone is the sturdiest material used in the construction industry. natural stone can withstand extreme weather and general wear and tear due to day to day use.
  • Easy to maintain - stains are rare to get a permanent place on stones. Plain water can wash most of the dirt and stains easily. Strong wipers are enough to remove frost, snow and excess rainwater from your exterior areas.

The Installation Process

For a semi-dry stone wall:
Before the patio is installed, the wall will be built. To start, the footings will be excavated via skip, digging to a depth of 300mm. High-quality concrete will then be mixed, poured and levelled before being left to set. After the concrete has hardened, the natural stone of various sizes will be used to create a stunning dry stone wall, courses will be staggered and broken up to create a beautifully mixed and random wall. The non-visible side of the wall will be set with a grit based mortar to ensure wall strength and longevity, whilst the visible side of the wall will have the appearance of being fully dry-stone. A land drain will also be installed behind the wall to divert water flow from the material being retained, this will ensure the wall is never under too much strain.

For a dry stone effect wall:
The Earth will be marked and excavated to make the wall straight and enlarge the patio. The stone wall will be semi-wet built, this means the back of the wall will be fixed and set with mortar, while the front of the wall will remain completely mortar free for a true dry stone wall effect.

For stone steps:
Steps will be built with larger stones and will overlap each other underneath, creating a very strong yet stunning staircase, sure to last the test of time.

For a dry stone effect retaining wall:
The area will be excavated via skip. A trench will then be dug .3m deep and infilled with concrete to create a firm and long-lasting footing for the wall. A block wall will then be built with staggered courses to act as a retainer for the land behind. Natural stone will then be back mortared in front of the block wall to create a beautiful dry natural stone effect retaining wall.
