What is a Mediterranean garden?
Mediterranean gardens are loved by many with their soft colours, gravel walks, brightly patterned tiles, clipped hedges, informal and drought tolerant plantings that offer the most amazing scents.
What are the characteristics of a Mediterranean garden?
Shaded seating areas - Due to the Mediterranean’s delightful climate shaded seating areas are a necessity. Providing the perfect place to unwind on a pleasant summer evening or a coffee with the break of dawn. Pergolas provide necessary shade whilst remaining as an attractive, decorative option. It is popular for them to be covered in climbing plants that scent the area when you sit down to relax.
Pot and containers - Terracotta pots and jars are a famous feature of Mediterranean gardens. Used as a focal point for container gardening, they are available in all shapes and sizes, from the small pot to the large urn or classic garden vase. Clay pots are favoured due to the fact they stay cool from evaporation compared to plastic pots that absorb the suns heat.
Gravel floor - In the Mediterranean, gardeners have long coped with too little water for their plants and gardens due to drought periods. Therefore lawns have been reduced or replaced entirely with gravel flooring. This significantly reduces water consumption, whilst being long-lasting and having very low maintenance.
Mediterranean tiles - Reminiscent of a mosaic, glazed coloured tiles are very decorative and may be used to decorate walls or patio floors. Available in a wide array of colours they are guaranteed to create dramatic colour accents with their rich combinations of pattern and colour.
