Artificial Grass

What is Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass is a synthetic alternative to natural grass. Often referred to as fake grass or artificial turf, artificial grass looks remarkably like the real thing with none of the drawbacks of natural turf. It can be installed anywhere you like it from gardens and lawns all the way to rooftops and even indoors!

What are the benefits?

  • Attractive - Artificial grass is extremely difficult to tell apart from the real thing. Unaffected by weather conditions, extreme frost or scorching summers will no longer play havoc with your lawn.
  • Low maintenance - Artificial grass is renowned for its low maintenance and pristine look all year round, a simple hose down or brush in autumn is enough to keep it looking tip-top.
  • No allergies - Artificial grass is perfect for hay fever sufferers thanks to a zero pollen count. According to AvoGel.com grass pollen is arguably the biggest cause of seasonal allergies, affecting approximately 90% of hay fever sufferers.
  • No more mud - The sublayer required to install fake grass acts as a barrier for ground soil, making it impossible for muddy puddles to congregate on your lawn. It also stops our furry friends from being able to dig mud holes and traipse this across the kitchen floor.
  • Pet-friendly - Where natural lawns are affected by ammonia, found in urine, with distinct browning patches and bald spots. Artificial turf is completely unaffected, the only thing you need to be mindful of is the number of times it is used as a toilet area.
  • Cost-effective - Whilst the initial costing can be quite pricey depending on the range, it is still an exceptional investment, especially when you consider the costs of a strimmer, lawnmower, rake, hand aerator, hand weeder, lawn spade, trimmer, lawn shears, lawn scissors, hose and sprinkler. Not to mention ongoing costs of blade replacements, electricity, re-seeding, fertilising and water rates.

The Installation Method

For Artificial Grass Area:
The artificial grass area will need to be excavated to 150mm from the finished height of the lawn, with all waste removed via skip. 100mm of M.O.T will be infilled, raked level and compressed. The M.O.T acts as a drainable layer whilst also acting as a very firm and stable sub-base for the lawn. Once the M.O.T has been added, a thick geotextile membrane will be added to stop aggregate loss between layers. Sharp grit sand will then be added, levelled and compressed to around 40mm, leaving enough room for the artificial grass to be laid on top to fit flush into the edges of the lawn. Once the soft and luscious artificial grass has been rolled out and laid in situ, edges will be cut neatly. The perimeter of the grass will then be nailed down with 6-inch galvanised steel nails which will oxidise and bond with the limestone derived aggregates for a strong and long-lasting grip, invisible from view. The grass will then be brushed up and the area thoroughly cleaned, all excess materials will be taken away and disposed of appropriately. The new garden area will be ready to use!
